If you or someone you care about has been charged with a crime, you need a criminal-defense lawyer on your side that you can have a real conversation with, someone who can actually relate to you as a person. You’ll never feel belittled or out of place when you come to Hanauer Law in Peoria. He’s the first person you’ll see when you come to us because he understands what you’re going through, and you’ll never feel like your case is just one of hundreds. We believe in a quality practice, not a quantity practice. That means we prioritize personalized and dedicated criminal defense for each unique case.

That takes time and money. However, we focus on fewer cases with the goal of obtaining a more-favorable outcome than if we handled more cases. Rob is not your typical attorney and this is not your typical firm. We know that getting a favorable outcome to your case means that we are in it together, shoulder to shoulder.

The last thing that someone who is facing the possibility of imprisonment and fines needs is to feel overwhelmed and treated like a criminal by their own lawyer. When you come to us for help, you gain a solid ally and you’ll have the kind of skilled, aggressive defense that will make the other side flinch.

Confused About Why You Have Been Charged with a Crime in the Greater Peoria Area?

You are not alone if you are utterly confused about how this could have happened to you. Our criminal defense attorneys in Peoria have seen this happen all too many times; clients come to us confused about why the police have showed up at their door or why they are being investigated in connection with a crime.

It’s frightening to wonder what is going to happen and not have any answers. Our criminal defense team does everything possible to put you at ease and help you understand what you’ve been accused of and outline the steps we plan to take to negotiate on your behalf, or to get the charges reduced or dismissed altogether.

While knowing legal procedure inside and out is crucial when you have been charged with a crime, we know that getting a positive outcome calls for much more than that. It calls for patience, heart, and a drive to get you the result you need. We’re in it to help our clients and win—regardless of the obstacles.

About Imprisonment and Fines

The most common question we get when a client comes to us is, “Will I have to go to jail?” While we do everything possible to get the charges against you dismissed or reduced, it’s important to understand some basic information about state criminal charges and penalties in Illinois. Criminal charges are largely divided into two categories based on the severity of the crime and how much jail time and fines are assessed if someone is found guilty. For instance, a theft can be a misdemeanor or a felony depending on the value of the item allegedly stolen. Crimes can also be State or Federal offenses:

  • Misdemeanors are crimes penalized with a fine and a potential sentence of up to one year in the county jail.
  • Felonies are crimes penalized with a fine and a potential sentence of one year or more in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
  • Federal crimes include misdemeanors or felonies which violate U.S. laws and are often investigated by federal agencies such as the IRS, FBI, ATF, etc. Sentences are governed by mandatory minimums (set by federal statute) and sentencing guidelines which take into consideration the specific characteristics of the criminal offense to establish a base offense level and the defendant’s criminal history to establish a sentencing guideline range in terms of months. Often, sentences in federal court are very severe.  However, Rob Hanauer has consistently and successfully argued for below-guideline sentences and has often obtained favorable outcomes for his clients, regularly securing sentences which eliminate years from their guideline range.
