Our founder, Rob Hanauer, knows the law and the legal system inside and out. Before building Hanauer Law, he spent eleven years learning the general practice of law from his mentor, Dan O'Day, and six years teaching business law and paralegal studies at the local community college.

Experience and Communication: Legal Success

In so doing, Rob gained the invaluable ability to clearly explain legal concepts and recognize when a person has come to an understanding of the ideas being discussed. Additionally, Rob’s experience in business-to-business advertising sales taught him how to “sell” the client’s story in or out of court through effective communication. This has resulted in many "not guilty" verdicts and other favorable outcomes for clients. Today, surrounded by an amazing team of equally- capable and tenacious professionals, Rob’s infectious work-hard-play-hard way of life has created a firm culture that people notice.

How Hanauer Law Began

Rob Hanauer had been working with his friend, mentor, and boss, Attorney Dan O’Day, for over 11 years. Dan showed him what a real job was and helped light the spark in Rob to become a lawyer.

It had been about seven years since Rob had been admitted to the Illinois State Bar, and his plan was to work with Dan until Dan retired or scaled back his practice and thereafter build upon Dan's legacy by training the next generation of new lawyers in the same thorough fashion in which Dan trained Rob. Life was progressing as a matter of course.

Then, in September 2018, everything changed suddenly and unexpectedly when Dan passed away. Rob’s wife was due to have their first daughter in a matter of days, and he was faced with feelings of uncertainty and fear in a future without Dan’s wisdom to guide him. Despite the feelings of uncertainty and fear, Rob decided to part ways with Dan's former law firm and start his own firm. As he was mindlessly packing away item after item from the shelves of his office at Dan’s firm, one item caught his attention, almost like it had called out to him. He turned the item over and read the inscription:

Journey: 'For I know the plans I have for you,’ says the LORD. ‘They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.'

Jeremiah 29:11

Nothing could be more timely, more prophetic, or more uplifting in that dark moment. With those words, Rob felt an unexplainable, calming presence and the certainty that he could build a future with stability and service for his family and the community. From that moment, he knew that if he worked hard and steadfastly, things would work themselves out.

He set out to start his own law firm and has created what we have today at Hanauer Law, a strong group of like-minded, energetic, and highly-competent legal professionals who take pride in helping people get the knowledgeable legal representation they need and deserve.
